A Struggle Unseen: The Battle for a Monarch Host
In this piece, Yasmina Hsieh explores the hidden and fragile struggle between the monarch butterfly and the plants it depends on for survival. Central to this battle is the milkweed—the butterfly's vital host—whose presence is increasingly threatened by the invasive black swallow-wort. Often overlooked, this quiet conflict unfolds beneath the surface: the swallow-wort masquerades as a suitable home but fails to sustain monarch larvae, jeopardizing their future.

Through this work, we can see the delicate balance within ecosystems and the unseen challenges faced by pollinators. It is a call to awareness—reminding us that even the smallest, hidden battles have profound impacts on the natural world.

This work is a collaborative effort using monarch butterflies created by fellow Missituk students. This past school year, Missituk elementary nominated the Monarch as its mascot. To celebrate the school's new monarch butterfly mascot, students—guided by Mrs. Rich—helped create a their own beautiful representation of this iconic pollinator. Their artwork honors the transformation and resilience symbolized by the monarch, and highlights the importance of protecting its habitat.
