Molly Froelich

Artist and Medford Resident

I have been writing haiku for 14 years now, as a sort of walking mediation. It’s a practice that that gives me a lot of joy, especially when I share my poems with others. I love haiku as an art form, it’s focus on simplicity and clarity and insight and also that it invites me to focus in on my observations, to really notice things, to be present. I wrote these three haiku poems specifically for the Hidden Moments theme with the intent of lifting up the contributions of an unsung Medford resident from the 18th century, the slave known as Pomp, who built the Slave Wall on Grove Street in West Medford. As a West Medford resident, I pass by the wall every day. There are countless people though the years who have made Medford what it is today but because of their race or status in society they have gone unnoticed and unrecognized for their skills and efforts. They are indeed hidden in plain sight and; now more than ever, it's the right time to bring them into the light and celebrate them.
